Why Red Light Helps You Sleep
Curious how red light bulbs help with sleep?
It’s all about blue light—or more importantly, the absence of it!
Why Blue Light Disrupts Sleep
Blue light exposure before bed disrupts your natural sleep cycle. Specialized cells in your eyes detect blue light wavelengths, signaling your brain to stay alert by suppressing melatonin—the hormone that makes you sleepy.
While blue light from sunlight is essential during the day, evening exposure from phones, computers, and bright LED bulbs tricks your brain into thinking it's still daytime. This blocks melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep.
How Red Light Promotes Better Sleep
Red light bulbs provide soothing, ambient illumination without the sleep-disrupting blue wavelengths. Unlike white light (which contains plenty of blue light wavelengths) red light bulbs won't interfere with melatonin production, allowing your body to naturally prepare for sleep.
Red light bulbs support your circadian rhythm and helps signal to your brain that it's time to wind down—making it the perfect lighting choice for evening routines.
Simple Solutions for Better Sleep
If you struggle with falling asleep and currently use bright lights or screens in the evening, switching to red light bulbs 2-3 hours before bed could significantly improve your sleep quality!

Why use an incandescent red light vs. a red LED light?
We strongly believe the natural, analogue source of incandescence is always best - especially when winding down before bed.
Red LED bulbs emit only red light but exhibit an unnatural isolated spectral spike, while incandescent red light bulbs produce a smooth, gradual orange/red spectrum that extends into the infrared region.
What is the difference between red light therapy bulbs and red light bulbs?
Red light therapy bulbs/lamps and lamps are specifically designed to emit red and near-infrared wavelengths within the therapeutic range to penetrate deeper into the skin and tissues, promoting cellular repair, reducing inflammation, and enhancing circulation.
Red light bulbs, on the other hand, emit only visible red light, perfect for a soothing nighttime ambience to wind down before bed, without any blue light to inhibit the release of melatonin. Of course, incandescent red light bulbs emit infrared light as well, but not at a high enough output to be used for targeted therapeutic benefits.
Can I use a red light bulb for red light therapy?
No, standard red light bulbs do not provide the necessary intensity required for a therapeutic dose of light.
I already use Chromalux® full spectrum incandescent bulbs; how will this bulb differ?
Our Unwind™ red bulb is strictly red light - no other color wavelengths of visible light will be emitted. Chromalux® full spectrum light is our brand name full spectrum light bulb that emits a full and enhanced visible color spectrum that uplifts mood, creativity, and enhances your home through more vivid colors and contrast.
Use Chromalux® full spectrum bulbs throughout the home for an uplifting colorful light, and these only before bed!
